What Happens Post Production?

-

Over the last few months we’ve blogged a fair bit about what we are doing at Zeddy Productions, the shoots we’ve been on and how we film different styles of shoot. This blog is about what happens post production. After the camera’s stop rolling and we head back to the office……what then?

What is Post Production?

In a nutshell, Post Production is the blanket term given to the work that takes place after the shoot. There is a huge scope of extras that can be added to the finished video during editing; colour grading (more on this later), animations, text, intros, outros, music, voice overs and amendments. Sometimes this takes several days, sometimes just a few hours. Fortunately for us, we have an awesome team of editors who work their magic time and again.

Where do you start?

For each shoot we always have a written brief of what the client is looking for from the finished video for the camera op, producer/director and editor to follow so we’re all on the same page.

When the footage is back in the office it’s uploaded into the editing software, Adobe Premier Pro, so that all of the shots are visible. If the video needs music adding then the editor will choose this first. Choosing the right track to go over the video can take hours on its own, we want it to be perfect! Once the track is chosen, it is edited to the length of the finished video so that the editor has the exact timeline that they need to start adding the screen shots to.

The editor then looks for the best shots to fit the client brief, puts a start and end shot into the timeline as a point of reference and then starts building a story with the rest of the shots. We use other Adobe applications to finalise the video with animation, logos and text.

Colour Grading

When we’re shooting the video, we always film “flat”, which means shooting with desaturated colouring. That way we can add vibrant colour during the edit to give the finished video a great looking glossy finish. The software we use helps but there is a lot of editor judgment as well.

Finished Product

When the editor is happy that the video looks great, and meets the client’s brief, it is sent to the client for approval.

Sometimes they come back to us with requests for slight amendments, and this can happen 2-3 times if we’re tweaking little bits to make it perfect.
